An Act That Could Save Lives: Protecting Children, Creating a Safe Environment


Every November, the Philippines celebrates National Children's Month, a time dedicated to highlighting the importance of keeping the youngest citizens safe. This year's theme, "Break the Prevalence, End the Violence: Protecting Children, Creating a Safe Philippines," underscores a critical and urgent need: to address the alarming reality of violence against children and create a society where every child feels protected and empowered.


The Philippines has a long history of advocating for children's rights, dating back to the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. This commitment has resulted in the establishment of dedicated government agencies like the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC), the National Youth Commission (NYC), and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), all working tirelessly to support children in need.

However, despite these efforts, the prevalence of violence against children remains a pressing concern, many young citizens was forced to do labor by their parents . Studies have revealed that a significant portion of Filipino children experience violence within their own homes, highlighting the need to address the root causes, often stemming from ineffective or harmful disciplinary practices which is beating.

"Break the Prevalence, End the Violence" calls for a multi-pronged approach. It demands a collective effort from families, communities, and the government to create a society where children are safe from all forms of abuse and exploitation. This includes promoting awareness about child protection, providing access to essential services like healthcare and education, and enacting and enforcing stricter laws against child abuse.

National Children's Month is not just a time for reflection; it's a call to action. It's an opportunity for individuals, families, and organizations to actively participate in creating a safer environment for children. This can be done through supporting child protection programs, volunteering at orphanages, or simply spending quality time with children in our lives.

The future of the Philippines rests on the well-being of its children. By embracing the theme "Break the Prevalence, End the Violence," we can work towards a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential, creating a truly safe and prosperous Philippines for generations to come.
